PROJECT: Charlotte Coliseum Implosion – Charlotte, North Carolina
STRUCTURE: Basketball Arena
CLIENT: Pope and Land Enterprises
CONTRACT AMOUNT: $2,800,000

Demolition and Implosion Schedule Summary
The first phase of demolition was completed in approximately two months. CST Environmental demolished the arena floor and seating area. The floor was an elliptical shape and was approximately 22,000 square feet. CST Environmental also removed the rear service concourse and the exterior masonry brick in preparation for the implosion.
The second phase of the project was preparation for the implosion. The project required 550 pounds of explosives. CST Environmental prepared the interior beams for linear copper clad shape charges. Each charge was composed of 13 pounds of explosives. Each shape charge was wrapped in a reinforced box with layers of reinforce chain and rubber belting. The reinforcement was necessary to force the energy of the shape charge to cut the steel beams. The implosion began in the rear of the coliseum. The shape charges were set on a 5 millisecond time delay to minimize the shock wave. The entire implosion took 13
seconds. This phase took only one week to complete.
The third phase of the demolition project was final clearing of the implosion debris and site grading. The final demolition phase took 4 months to complete. Grading occurred in conjunction with the demolition and will take five months to complete. During this phase, CST Environmental removed over 60,000 tons of unsuitable soil. CST Environmental separated the remaining scrap metal and processed the remaining concrete and asphalt for onsite fill.
Total Structural Recycling Summary
At the completion of the Charlotte Coliseum demolition project, CST Environmental recycled approximately 70,000 tons of material including masonry brick, concrete, ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The brick and masonry was used as fill for the City Park Development project. CST Environmental also recycled 18,000 tons of asphalt from the parking lots. Items such as the 24,000 seats, basketball court and other miscellaneous items where sold or donated by Pope and Land to local sports organizations. Over 90% of the material was recycled, exceeding the industry recycling standard of 30%.
